Robot Controller software update improves track testing efficiency

28.02.2023

We are releasing a significant update to our Robot Controller Software, RC 9.4, to streamline ADAS testing.

The new software has been developed in response to the increasing demands of NCAP testing, with a big focus on improved usability. By automating the majority of the ADAS testing process operators can increase the efficiency, accuracy and repeatability of their testing. This is achieved by providing a streamlined environment that seamlessly manages the planning, execution, and review of tests using our robotic track testing products

The update includes:

  • An updated library of Euro NCAP 2023 preconfigured test scenarios
  • Streamlined ADAS testing workflows greatly simplify and speed up the setup of target platforms and test scenarios
  • A fresh new flatter-style interface that is easier to see and navigate in bright light conditions. Highlighting effects when hovering over elements also aid usability

One of the key features of RC 9.4 is the addition of guided ADAS testing workflows, which greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to set-up LaunchPad and GST Platforms. When either of these platforms are detected, the software will automatically launch step-by-step workflows to guide the operator through the system start-up and test setup process. As a result of the new workflows the number of actions required to start-up platforms has been halved.

Another significant RC 9.4 development is the updating of Euro NCAP Special Groups for 2023. Special Groups are a comprehensive library of preconfigured test scenarios. The update enables automated testing of every current Euro NCAP ADAS protocol requiring driving robots. There are currently more than 600 different test cases in the Euro NCAP Special Groups library, which includes 150 new scenarios added for the latest 2023 protocol update. By using Special Groups, operators can save months of track and planning time.

RC 9.4 also runs cross-checks to ensure the test is defined properly according to the specific test requirements. This includes aspects such as data capture rate and vehicle reference points. The post-test processing tool will validate the test data and provide a preliminary real-time pass or fail result.

“We practise continuous product improvement, and this latest evolution of our product has been developed in collaboration with our customers to make it easier to use, remains familiar and is future-proofed for upcoming regulation changes and new testing capabilities,” said Dr Andrew Pick, Business Director, Track Test Systems at AB Dynamics. “We are expecting the number of elements in a test scenario to increase, particularly as the testing of autonomous technologies becomes more common. This is one of the reasons why our unique ability to provide two-way communication between the vehicle under test and the other elements in the scene is so important.”

Compatibility:

  • RC9.4 can be run with PowerPMAC 9. We would recommend updating to the latest version of PowerPMAC, 9.1.9.
  • If running a multi-vehicle scenario using Synchro, all robot systems must have a matching Major release number (i.e., the first number). This means it is not possible to run Synchro between RC8 and RC9.
  • If using RC9.4 with a driverless system this will require either Driverless Basestation (DBS) v1.37.0 or Ground Traffic Control (GTC) 1.4.1 or higher to be used.  Please, therefore, update DBS/GTC alongside RC and PowerPMAC versions

The new RC 9.4 software will be available as standard on all new track testing products from the 7th of March 2023. It can also be installed to upgrade appropriate hardware manufactured after 2015, when AB Dynamics switched to its latest controllers.
