Formula Student competitors virtually race using AB Dynamics’ simulator

07.07.2022

This week at the UK’s Silverstone motorsport circuit, Formula Student competitors will race against each other in simulation using AB Dynamics’ Static Plus driving simulator.

The aVDS Static Plus simulator is configured as a single-seater motorsport cockpit for the event but can be integrated into both motorsport and automotive vehicle cabins. The aVDS Static features an active brake pedal and an active steering force feedback system, which provides an immersive static driver-in-the-loop experience.

Formula Student is sponsored by AB Dynamics and run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Over 100 university teams from across 30 countries compete to design, build and race single-seater cars. As part of the event this year, students will also race virtual vehicles they have developed using IPG Automotive’s CarMaker around a virtual track. The fastest student will win a visit to AB Dynamics’ UK headquarters for a drive of our aVDS Dynamic simulator.

The universities are supplied with a template CarMaker virtual vehicle model which the teams develop by optimising more than 20 different vehicle parameters. The aim is to develop the fastest virtual race car across three separate disciplines. The virtual competition takes place in a digital twin of the real-world race circuit, which is CarMaker based with improved visuals from AB Dynamics Group company rFpro.

The addition of the virtual competition is an indication of how critical simulation has become to vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and motorsport teams, and provides the students with valuable experience of industry-critical tools.

If you would like to see students competing using the aVDS Static Plus Simulator, please visit the AB Dynamics stand at the event which runs from 6-10 July.
